Momentum on the LA River moves forward!

Last Tuesday, Mayor Garcetti announced the release of the new Strategic Plan for the Department of Transportation (LADOT).  Within this plan, (page 46 to be exact) Garcetti implemented policy from our Greenway 2020 campaign as a key benchmark

What does that mean?

For the first time, the city’s Department of Transportation will put the building-out the L.A. River path by 2020 on its official to-do list for Los Angeles!

You can imagine how excited we were upon hearing this news. It was just a little over year ago when the LA River Corp first publicly introduced the Greenway 2020 campaign at a brown bag lunch in city hall.  The goal of connecting all 51 miles of the river has remained central to what we believe is a new way of living for Los Angeles.

Now, our Greenway 2020 campaign is Mayoral public policy and offers us a special opportunity to give the city the connective tissue it deserves. Greenway 2020 will bridge the gaps that exist not only in the L.A. River bike path, but between diverse communities.

Imagine what the city will look like when the goal of our joint efforts is achieved: A continuous 51-mile bike path along a restored Los Angeles River where the city can host a CicLAvia every day, where families and friends can stroll and discover. All tied together in an environmentally friendly landscape. It’s the kind of project that befits a great city, and we’re now that much closer.

This is by no means a finish line, however we are making significant strides for greater connected communities: one mile at a time.
